Cabbage rolls have been a family favorite for generations.  The mixture of ground beef, rice, cabbage, and tomato sauce has its place in many cultures around the world.  This rendition is delicious, easy and cooked outdoors.  A true combination for success in the backyard or on your next outdoor adventure.

The first thing to do is to get our ingredients together.  Choosing a good head of cabbage can be a challenge.  Choose a head that is heavy for its size, tightly wrapped and has nice deep green outer leaves.  A well-chosen cabbage is a must for this dish.  It’s the star of the show and we don’t want a bitter end.

Preheat the oven to get the ground beef browned.  Mix the rest of the ingredients in a bowl and add to the oven.

Put on the lid.  Arrange coals to get even coverage and let the oven and fire work their magic.

Deconstructed Cabbage Rolls in a Dutch Oven

Deconstructed Cabbage Rolls in a Dutch Oven

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 (29 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 3 1/2 pounds cabbage, chopped
  • 1 cup uncooked white rice
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 (14 ounce) cans beef broth

Instructions

  1. Preheat to 350 degrees F
  2. In a Dutch oven, brown beef in oil over medium high heat until redness is gone. Drain, or spoon off fat.
  3. In a large mixing bowl combine the onion, tomato sauce, cabbage, rice and salt. Add to meat and mix all together. Pour broth over meat mixture and bake in the Dutch oven for about 1 ½ hours, stirring occasionally. Check the coals to be sure you sustain a nice simmer. Add coals if necessary.
